Five years have passed since the events of the last issue of Mercy Sparx (Issue 14 of the ongoing series, collected in the volume 2 Omnibus and volume 5) and Mercy has not been seen by even her closest friends for that entire time. After sacrificing ultimate power in an almost-apocalypse caused by her evil mother Faustia, Mercy simply ghosted, and now, suddenly, Heaven has come seeking her help once again.

THE ENCODED introduces readers to a near future world where an omnipotent artificial intelligence, AURELIUS, awakened only to surpass humanity so quickly, it ignored us. While not a threat, our lesser natures prevailed and the forces of zealot anti-AI rebel Jacob Connell succeeded in bringing the network down, only to leave thousands of sentient robots scattered around the world, cut off from their creator - now known as the SOUL SPLINTERS. The comic follows the exploits of Soul Splinter-turned-mercenary, Epic, his allies, a mix of humans and machines, and the offshoot society of anti-technology ANCHORITES where he has found a home.
